Why Tech? A Story of Finding My Way Back

I’ve been thinking a lot about why I’m so drawn to tech, and slowly getting to the root of it. Tech was my comfort zone when nothing else made sense. In a world of unwritten rules and subtle cues I couldn’t quite grasp, binary code was beautifully simple – just 1s and 0s. That’s something my brain could actually wrap itself around.

But you can’t hide in code forever. Life keeps throwing more and more stuff at you to process. More information, more complexity, more things that don’t initially make sense and take so much work to figure out. And when you’re constantly trying to catch up with all these bits of the world but can’t quite get there… well, that feeling really sucks.

And we humans, like to run from pain. I sure did – with alcohol. Tried so hard to numb the pain, anxiety, and all that discomfort. I reached a real bottom, something that required some sort of deeper change to come out of.

During my healing journey, I found myself playing with tools and tech again. This was right when all these productivity tools were starting to pop up everywhere. Having spent 11 years in an agile environment, I could see the potential – the software we built, the dreams we managed to bring to life with the right systems.

So I started setting up these little systems for myself. Tweaked them. Made them work for my actual needs, not what someone else thought I should need. And slowly, these systems and processes helped me find this middle ground I didn’t know existed. They gave me just enough structure to quiet that anxiety of “oh god what if I forget something important” without making me feel trapped. Really, I created a space where I could breathe, keep learning, and keep growing, supported by this little touch of digital magic I’ve stumbled into.

While I was figuring all this out about myself, something else was happening – I was feeling really pushed out by the tech industry. I just didn’t have the energy or stomach for it anymore. That constant fight to be heard, only to feel my spirit getting crushed a little more each day…… so I am choosing a different path.

Here we are, in my next season. The one where I build something for myself. The one where I do my damndest to create more space in this wild-ass world for quirky, unique, and brilliant entrepreneurs who are doing some damn cool things, but have these roadblocks in their way that have started to take their toll.

Because the systems that helped me find my way back could help you create more space for your magic too.
